FAFSA The office of Federal Student Aid provides grants, loans, and work-study funds for college or career school. “Federal Student Aid is responsible for managing the student financial assistance programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. These programs provide grants, loans, and work-study funds to students attending college or career school.”
Federal Pell Grants Provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate students and certain post-baccalaureate students to help expand access to postsecondary education. Grant amounts are based on the student’s Student Aid Index (SAI), cost of attendance as determined by the institution, enrollment status (full-time or part-time), and whether the student attends for a full academic year or less. Eligibility is limited to students who have not yet earned their first bachelor’s degree or who are enrolled in certain post-baccalaureate programs that lead to teacher certification or licensure. Grants and scholarships are considered “gifted aid”. Usually, grants and scholarships do not have to be paid back. Grants tend to be awarded on needs based. Scholarships are usually awarded on merit. To find out more about grants and scholarships go to studentaid.gov.
Direct Stafford Loans Direct Federal Loans are student loans that must be repaid and are available to both undergraduate and graduate students. Interest rates may vary depending on when the loan is borrowed. There are two types of Direct Federal Loans:
- Subsidized Direct Loan – A loan in which the government pays the interest while the student is in school, during grace periods, and during any deferment periods.
- Unsubsidized Direct Loan – A loan in which the student is responsible for paying all interest that accrues from the date of the first disbursement until the loan is paid in full.
Direct PLUS Loans The Parent PLUS Loan is a federal student loan available to parents of dependent undergraduate students. Parents may borrow a Parent PLUS Loan to help cover their child’s college or school expenses. The Parent PLUS Loan features a fixed interest rate and flexible borrowing limits.
